This entry-level course is designed especially for students new to the objective method for appreciating art as developed by Dr. Albert Barnes and Violette de Mazia and informed by the philosophy of John Dewey. This class will offer students the tools to begin to answer questions such as: Why are artists able to capture our imagination decades or even centuries after their work was created? What is an aesthetic experience? How can a viewer begin to understand and discuss works of art? Students will study the aesthetic, expressive, and communicative content of works of art, undertake personal and independent analysis of artworks, and participate in group discussions and lively classroom activities.
