Seminar, General Description:
Seminar is designed to strengthen students’ understanding of and conversancy with the objective method for art appreciation. Held in the galleries of the Barnes Foundation, these classes will explore specific artists and/or concepts in-depth. In Seminar the instructor is a guide, and the students will participate in class discussion, prepare and present talks, and engage in personal and group projects that encourage mastery of objective analysis. Seminar is intended for those students interested in the rewards of a richer understanding of the objective method only possible through individual, concentrated use, and practice. Successful completion of Part I and Part II or their equivalents is a prerequisite.


Seminar: Topics in Early Modern Art
The Barnes Foundation, Merion
Wednesdays, September 3 - December 10, 1-3 pm
Instructor: Bill Perthes

Topics in Early Modern Art will examine artists and artwork from the early modern era represented in the Barnes Foundation. This seminar class will pick up where Traditions left off, focusing on works of art from the early 20th century collected by Dr. Barnes before his death in 1951. Topics will be broken into modules exploring the aesthetic and expressive content of works by specific artists including Matisse/Picasso, Modigliani/Rouault, and Klee/Wols/Hartley. The class will also examine the relationship of these artists to art that preceded them as well as implications for the art that followed. Through a combination of class discussion and independent work students will explore the challenges and problems raised by these artists, their work, and the early modern era.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of both Part I and Part II or their equivalents.
