New for 2006: Delaware State University, in collaboration with The Violette de Mazia Foundation, is offering a 2006 fall-semester seminar, “Informed Perception: An Objective Approach to Aesthetic Appreciation.” This seminar is specifically designed for individuals who are currently members of the teaching profession, or for current upper-level undergraduates and graduate students in Art Education, Studio Art, Art History, and Philosophy, who intend to pursue teaching as part of their career.

The class will be held at Delaware State University’s Wilmington Campus on Market Street Mondays, August 29-December 17, from 5 to 8:45 p.m. Students may earn three credits, undergraduate or graduate. Full scholarships are available upon review.

This course will introduce participants to an objective method for the appreciation of the art in art. Designed for K-12 teachers or for students preparing to teach, the course will explore visual expression and its relation to daily life. Students will be guided to experience works of art directly, encouraged to make aesthetic discoveries, and enabled to undertake personal and independent analyses of works of art. Lectures, readings, group discussion, individual projects, and lively classroom activities will be employed.

Inspired by the writings of Albert Barnes, John Dewey, and Violette de Mazia, and based on Violette de Mazia’s 1920’s to 1980’s program of study at The Barnes Foundation, this seminar reinterprets their work and represents their concepts for 21st century students.
